The latest drought monitor released from the National Drought Mitigation Center Thursday still shows the southern Plains, southwest and even the extreme southeast struggling with exceptional drought - as it has been for the past several months! Even closer to home a severe drought has developed for southern Minnesota, parts of Iowa and west-central Illinois. Residents in southern Wisconsin are also dealing with abnormally dry conditions (they haven't received as much rain as we have over the past couple of weeks).
Relief, however, may be on the way for some of the places that desperately need it! The 1-3 day outlook (Friday through Monday) from the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center shows a bulls eye of ten inches of rainfall from southern Oklahoma to northern Texas! The heavy rain threat even extends up through Kansas and Nebraska. Now whether or not they in fact receive ten inches of rainfall remains to be seen but a good 3"-5" is likely as a cold front stalls in the middle of the U.S. and another area of low pressure develops along it this weekend. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they do receive the rainfall they so desperately need!
