As severe drought conditions continue across the Stateline, the state of Illinois and Mother Nature are each doing their best to try and help. Let's start with Mother Nature...
Tonight's forecast is calling for a cold front to slowly dip into the area. This front is already producing showers and thunderstorms in central Wisconsin, with scattered showers and storms possible for the Stateline starting tonight and running through Thursday morning. This system will not be a drought buster, but according to the National Weather Service, it could provide up to 0.50" of rain for some areas in that time frame.
As for the state, Illinois has launched a website that it hopes will aid in providing assistance to areas hit especially hard by dry conditions. You can check out the site here. It provides information regarding current conditions, how to get help if you are affected by the drought, and which counties have already been declared disaster areas.
As you can see from this picture sent in by Dom Castaldo, the drought is having a profound affect on all sorts of vegetation across the Stateline. This picture shows something called tomato rot. It's a condition that happens when tomatoes don't get enough calcium due to inadequate moisture. Let's hope the forecast holds and we get some rain this week.
