Quite the impressive storm system brewing out west this afternoon and evening! While severe weather continues in full force in the central and southern Plains, we're gearing up for a lot of rain in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
Below you'll find Monday evening's weather update. But don't forget that this week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois.
Let's talk a little about winter preparedness. Just like being prepared during severe weather season, winter weather preparedness should also be a top priority. Here are some things to have at your home and office:
-Flashlight & extra batteries
-NOAA Weather Radio - battery backup should the power go out
-Extra non-perishable food & water
-First Aid kit and supplies/Emergency medicine & baby supplies
-Extra heating fuel. It's important to remember NOT to use space heaters, the oven or grills to heat your home if you lose power. Those can, and do, cause fires and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
-Make sure you smoke & carbon monoxide detectors are properly working
-And don't forget about your pets. Make sure they have the necessary food and shelter in the event you lose power or get stranded in your vehicle.
For more on winter weather preparedness, be sure to follow the Chicago National Weather Service.
WTVO/WQRF is proud to be part of the Weather Ready Nation and serve as ambassadors for northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. It's our role and responsibility to help inspire others to be better informed and prepared to minimize, or even avoid, the impacts of natural disaster. Such as severe weather and winter storms. We encourage you to share your preparedness plan with others around you, hopefully inspiring them to make a preparedness plan - and then spreading that word to others.
