Windy Thursday

The strong low pressure that brought strong and severe storms to the Stateline last night is now located in Lake Michigan. The storms and most of the rain is far to the east along the cold front, but the winds wrapping around the system are still strong.

This is because pressure levels are rising quickly as the low moves northeast. When we have a big difference in pressure - we call this a large gradient - and large gradients generate strong winds. A Wind Advisory is still in effect this morning and will last until 6pm. Through the late morning, gusts from the west are still possible, making driving on north/south oriented roads very difficult. Winds will gust around 35-45mph through the afternoon and then towards the evening, gust at 35mph. This will bring sustained winds and wind gusts below advisory criteria.

Driving will be on the difficult side at times today because of those wind gusts, you'll want to use a lot of caution, especially if you are driving a high profile vehicle on north/south roads. Tomorrow afternoon winds will gust from the NW at 40 mph; it will feel like were in the 30's for most of the afternoon even though highs will reach the low 40's. High pressure builds in for the weekend, winds lighten up, we see a lot more sun, and temperatures will warm into the low to mid 50's.
