The National Weather Service out of the Quad Cities issued a severe thunderstorm warning just before 2:30 this afternoon for Stephenson County. A line of storms about 50 miles wide moved through from southwest to northeast across far NW Illinois. The southeastern tip of this line weakened just before it moved through western Stephenson county around 2:45. So significant wind and hail probably didn't occur with this line.
A new warning was just issued moments ago for Green and Rock counties in south-central Wisconsin. This severe thunderstorm warning goes through 4:45 pm. Quarter-size hail and wind gusts in excess of 60mph are possible with this storm as it zips to the northeast at about 65mph. Interestingly, Eric Nefstead and I were watching this storm move across Stephenson county about 20 minutes ago... Wondering if the NWS out of the Quad Cities would issue a warning for it. It turns-out they didn't. But Green and Rock county Wisconsin are the responsibility of the NWS office in Sullivan, Wisconsin. And they DID issue a warning for the same storm. This just goes to show how close to minimum severe threshold some of these storms have been thus far! One NWS office thought it was severe, the other didn't. We'll continue to watch things this evening! --TS
