Just a few hundred miles South, a major winter storm is going to be causing nightmarish travel conditions for many in the Ohio River Valley. Many from Kansas to Missouri over to Central/Southern Illinois and Indiana over the Appalachian Mountains are under a winter storm warning or higher! But why are we not seeing any of the impacts here in Northern Illinois?
We have a LOT of dry air in place along with the influence of high pressure, limiting how far North the moisture from this storm can go. We will be cold enough for snow, but the track and moisture of this system will be too far away for much of anything to reach us. We may see a few flurries Sunday night from the tail end of this system, but our impacts are much more limited compared to others South.
On the back end of this system, it will be a bit breezy, causing things to feel cooler than they actually are. Wind gusts could reach 25-30 mph from a generally Northerly direction Sunday and Monday. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the 20s, but wind chills especially Sunday and Monday will be closer to the teens and single digits.
Our next area of focus for an impactful weather system locally would be late into next week, with a wide trough or disturbance moving through the area Friday. Still plenty of time for a forecast shift between now and then, but this could be the next chance for widespread precipitation (including snow) in the Midwest.
