Pattern favors more winter-like chill this week

As we have been below freezing for the past week, ice has begun building up on rivers, including this picture from our camera overlooking the Rock River near Jefferson Street.

A few ice jams have developed along the Rock River, including one downstream of Latham Rd in Machesney Park and another downstream of IL-72 in Byron. Ice jams can cause minor flooding as the jam blocks the water's path. Once the jams break up, the held-up water can flow freely downstream as well.

Temperatures will remain cold enough to develop more ice along rivers, as we will remain below freezing through much if not all of this week. Temperatures may inch closer to average for this time of year, or 29°, but we will likely be below freezing through the weekend and into next week.

Looking further into the weekend, our next potential for any accumulating snowfall would arrive in the Friday time frame. Higher moisture content with heavier snow looks to remain to our South and East along the track of the main area of low pressure. But we may be able to squeeze out a few snow showers on Friday.

The second half of *next* week will feature continued chill with a Northwest flow developing aloft. This will filter more arctic air our direction leading to colder temperatures lasting a bit longer. This pattern also favors occasional clipper systems, highlighted from subtle kinks in the flow. These clippers could bring spotty snow showers but typically are quick moving limiting snowfall accumulations.
