Low temperatures Wednesday morning fell into the single digits once again in Rockford and surrounding areas, with a low of 7 reported in Rockford. The clear sky from the morning did begin to fill in with cloud cover as stronger winds aloft were moving down the western Great Lakes. This led to mostly cloudy skies for about half of the viewing area in Wisconsin and Illinois, with mostly clear skies across northwest Illinois.
Temperatures once again warmed into the mid and upper 20s during the afternoon, now sitting on either side of 20 degrees as of 6pm.
High pressure building in from the west Wednesday night will continue to push cloud cover to our east, leaving skies mostly clear through the night. A light southwest wind overnight will slow the temperature drop but overnight lows are once again forecast to fall into the single digits. The forecast low for Rockford is currently at 9 degrees.
Southerly winds will start to increase shortly after sunrise Thursday, gusting 20-25 mph during the afternoon. This will help push high temperatures close to 30 degrees. After a mostly clear start cloud cover will be on the increase in response to a rise in moisture ahead of a cold front. This front will move through southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois Friday morning.
Dry air ahead of the front will limit precipitation and snow chances Thursday evening but a few flurries and light snow showers will be possible through sunrise Friday. This may cause some slick conditions during the morning commute. As the front shifts to the east during the morning and afternoon additional snow showers will be likely, with slightly higher accumulations occurring to the east. Snow flurries will remain possible into Friday evening.
