Big Changes Ahead

You've heard about the winter weather that will finally arrive to the Stateline, but I wanted to show you exactly why thats happening!

One thing meteorologists look at when we see quick changes in the upper pattern are the phases of the NAO and the AO, and also the the PNA. Both the NAO and AO are going to be turning negative at the beginning of  the month, while the PNA is going to be positive.

The negative phase of the NAO typically favors cold air sinking south over the East Coast, Great Lakes, and the Southeast. When the PNA is positive it favors warmer air over the western U.S as the jet stream lifts north.

This pattern, with a large and expansive ridge over the Atlantic, and another over the Pacific lifting up near Alaska, will support colder arctic and Canadian air to be pulled south over the center and east coast of the country. The cold air originating near Russia and Siberia, where the air there currently in -30°!

Now don't worry, it won't be THAT cold across the United States, but it will be a shock to the system after such a mild stretch of weather. Highs by the middle to end of next week won't even crack the 30° mark. And its possible that it gets even colder by the middle of the month!
