Monday Afternoon Weather Update

5:30pm Update: The heaviest snow has moved south of Highway 20 this evening, but impacts from the snow will still be felt through the night and early Tuesday.  Snow is now moving from near Amboy to DeKalb to north of Chicago.

Snow totals range anywhere from an inch from Rockford to Cherry Valley, to near two inches in Freeport.  However, towns in Carroll County - like Shannon and Lanark - recorded three inches of snow.

Winds have now shifted around to the northwest following the passage of the low and are expected to increase later this evening and overnight.  Wind gusts to 30 mph are possible which could cause some of the freshly fallen snow to blow around, especially in open and rural areas.

Original Post:

Low pressure spinning over northern Illinois early Monday afternoon has allowed a band of moderate, to at times heavy, snow to develop over far northern Illinois.  At times, the snow has been mixed with sleet and even a few rain showers.  Quick bursts of heavy snow are likely through roughly 4pm as the low continues to pull further away from the Stateline.

Accumulations will remain light, most likely less than an inch, but travel may become slick for some this afternoon and early evening.  Slushy accumulations have already begun in Freeport and northwest Illinois.

Winds will increase from the northwest this evening as the low passes to our east, gusting as high as 30mph.  Temperatures will also fall quickly this evening into the 20's with wind chills down into the teens.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Walworth County in Wisconsin until 6pm Monday evening.  A bit further to the north accumulations of a couple inches are likely.
