We're over one month into hurricane season and about two months away from peak season, but we're watching now a tropical storm off the east coast. Tropical Storm Chris is currently off the Carolina coast, with sustained winds around 60 mph but gusting evening higher.
This will bring strong winds to North Carolina today, as this storm remains fairly stationary through the afternoon. Chris is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane this evening, before it finally begins to move northeast through the Atlantic.
The good news is, there are minimal impacts to the east coast forecast, with mainly rough surf and tropical storm force winds for North Carolina today and tomorrow, and then the far northeast coast Wednesday to Thursday. However, there will also be a strong rip current along the east coast this week due to Chris.
Chris will be just off the coast of Maine by Friday morning before it continues to head into the Atlantic through the weekend. The hurricane season began June first and lasts through the end of November.
