First widespread rainfall in a month possible tomorrow night

It has been a very dry October, with only 0.03" of rain recorded at the Rockford airport through today's date (the 23rd). That is second driest on record, only behind the 0.01" of rain in 1952. The other driest Octobers in the top 5 were in 1964, 1956, and 1924. Safe to say, we really need some rain!

Luckily, we have some on the way! A broad swath of moisture along with ample forcing aloft will produce a widespread field of rain showers Thursday night into early Friday morning. Rainfall looks to start around or just after 9PM, with the heaviest rain picking up near midnight. A few thunderstorms may also be embedded within the strongest cores. Unfortunately, the steady to heavy rain will not last long, with most spots drying out by 6-7AM.

Since the rainfall will only last 8-9 hours, the totals could be muted in areas without any thunderstorm activity. That said, those who do see any storms could have totals in excess of 1" of rain. Most in the Stateline should expect 0.25-0.75" of rain, outside of higher totals within thunderstorms. Our Southern Wisconsin counties may get the short end of the stick, with some locations there possibly receiving less than 0.25" as the low pressure responsible for the rain passes South of I-88.

Looking ahead to next week, there is a big weather system on the way for mid-week. Unfortunately, that may put some Halloween plans into jeopardy depending on the exact timing. Roughly speaking, Monday and Tuesday will be warm and windy, but dry. Wednesday into Thursday could be the window to watch for possible rain and storms. Keep an eye on the forecast through the weekend!
