Tuesday's forecast: Sunshine continues its dominance

High pressure sitting close by left our skies quiet and dry overnight, giving our locales another opportunity to view the northern lights.

To those who sent us pictures, thank you! We received pictures from the Rockford area but also from some of our surrounding communities including Dakota, Pearl City, and DeKalb.

Last night's quiet skies also played a role in the rapid cooling that took place overnight, leaving morning temperatures in the upper 30s. Before heading out, grab a jacket or a sweatshirt. Wall-to-wall sunshine is to follow this today's chilly start, allowing afternoon highs to peak in the low 70s.

The same can be expected for Wednesday and for a good chunk of Thursday, with afternoon highs getting a few degrees closer to the 80° mark. 80s are likely on Friday as flow turns to the southwest. This is ahead of the first of two cold fronts that are expected to slide through this weekend. The second will help spill a much cooler air mass for Sunday and for early next week, bringing highs back into the 60s. Overnight lows Sunday and Monday may get cool enough for frost to develop. Something to monitor.
