Water temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific continue to fall to increasingly below-average levels, and the easterly trade winds near the equator continue to strengthen. These are sure signs of a developing La Nina. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, La Ninas can lead to increased tropical cyclone activity in the Carribean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico by decreasing wind shear in those areas. (Shear would otherwise tear developing hurricanes apart.)
The current La Nina is expected to gradually strenthen through the winter, although the degree of this strengthening is unknown at this point. --TS
