Severe Storms Possible Sunday Afternoon and Evening

Clouds are spiraling a large strong low pressure system centered over the northern plains. A warm front extends southeast from southwest Minnesota across southern Wisconsin just to the south of Milwaukee. A cool front drops south from western Minnesota through northwest Iowa and northeast Kansas into southeastern Colorado. Severe thunderstorms have broken out across several areas in the plains in advance of the cool front. The cool front will edge slowly eastward overnight and early tomorrow with the warm front remaining nearly stationary just to our north. Severe thunderstorms over Iowa are expected to weaken overnight, and their remants may reach far northwestern Illinois in the middle of the night, and possibly hang together from the early to the mid morning hours as they reach north central Illinois. Sunday will be a warm day for late May with a high around 83 degrees. The high temperature will be very dependent on the amount of sunshine our region gets. Instability will increase in the afternoon, and with the cool front just our west, warm moist air over the area, and cold air aloft, and a southwesterly jet stream nearly overhead, clusters of thunderstorms will develop and spread across the Stateline area. Some of those storms could be severe with damaging winds and large hail from late afternoon through the early evening. It will be cooler on Monday, and with cold air aloft there could be showers and thunderstorms once again. It will be a bit chilly from Tuesday on thru the rest of the work week before warming up a bit just in time for next weekend. The entire week looks unsettled weatherwise with a chance of showers each day. No severe weahter is anticipated once we get past midnight on Sunday night for the next 6 days.
