Storm Threat this Afternoon

Tornado Watch issued for the rest of the WTVO viewing audience until 10pm.

Tornado Watch issued for Carroll, Whiteside, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties until 9pm

11:30 am Update:  Tornado Watch will likely be issued for portions of Illinois and Wisconsin within the next hour or so.

All of the WTVO viewing area has been placed under a moderate risk for severe weather later this afternoon and evening.

While it may be sunny out this morning, that sunshine is what could fuel stronger storms later today as a cold front approaches from the west.  A disturbance rotating around the main upper low in the northern Plains will begin to move through western Great Lakes this afternoon.  Storms, individual at first, will likely develop in southern Minnesota, Iowa and western Wisconsin later this afternoon and then move east into Illinois with the upper level disturbance.  Hail, damaging winds and even tornadoes will be possible at first with some of the cells.  By evening the storms should form into a line of storms as they move across north-central and northeast Illinois where damaging winds and hail would be the primary threats.  Be sure to monitor the forecasts this afternoon for further updates.

  1. So, what are the chances for a tornado in Winnebago County this afternoon?

  2. Sorry for the long delay...if storms can develop out ahead of the main cold front late this afternoon and evening, the threat would be there for tornadoes. However, as the evening moves on and the storms hold together out west, the damaging wind and hail threat would become the primary.
