Tuesday morning weather update: Cold, followed by snow

7:00am Update: Light snow will continue to fall this morning reducing visibility some where the heavier bands of snow occur.  Again, not much is expected with this.  Maybe about a tenth of an inch.  A thin layer of snow on the roads could cause a few slick spots.

Clearing skies Monday night allowed temperatures to drop well below zero with wind chills getting as cold as -20°.  Now, as a quick moving low pressure systems zips to the north, the clouds have built back in with temperatures rising above zero.  A few lighter snow showers will be possible early this morning, but skies are expected to become partly cloudy by the afternoon.  In response to the low moving north, winds will increase from the southwest and then west with gusts up to 30 mph.  This will likely
keep wind chills below zero, if not at zero, through the afternoon.

Another low will move south of Northern Illinois late tonight and Wednesday morning.  This will cause snow to develop between 10pm and midnight tonight and continue through the Wednesday morning commute.  The snow will quickly accumulate due to such a cold air mass, cold ground and cold road pavement.  Snowfall accumulations look to be between 1" and 3" with
locally higher amounts a little further south of Rockford.  The snow will end around Noon Wednesday with temperatures falling near 8° by 3pm.  A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties beginning at Midnight tonight and lasting through 10am Wednesday.
