Friday weather update

12:20pm Update: Showers with embedded thunderstorms continue to move east through south-central Wisconsin and northern Illinois.  Heavier pockets of rain will be likely, but severe weather isn't anticipated for the afternoon.

Heavy rain producing thunderstorms moved through the Stateline earlier this morning, but the radar remains quiet in the short-term.  There are a few non-severe showers/storms beginning to move over the Mississippi River but moving at a very slow pace.  While earlier these storms produced over one inch sized hail in Iowa they have weakened some as the low level jet has weakened.  Despite the low level jet weakening there remains enough instability within the atmosphere to sustain these storms as they move east.  Moderate to heavy rainfall will be likely and some of the stronger cells could produce a few wind gusts over 45 mph.

Rainfall totals from this morning:

(7:29:19 AM) nwsbot: Local Storm Report by NWS DVN: Freeport [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports HEAVY RAIN of M2.00 INCH at 07:00 AM CDT -- 24-hr total.

(7:29:20 AM) nwsbot: Local Storm Report by NWS DVN: Mount Carroll [Carroll Co, IL] trained spotter reports HEAVY RAIN of M2.26 INCH at 07:00 AM CDT -- 24-hr total.
