The past couple of weeks have been pretty quiet when it has come to the weather. All that is about to change as the jet stream shifts to a more active and cooler pattern by mid-week. High pressure is still in control today but with a shift further east it has allowed a few more clouds to build in this afternoon. Cloud cover will continue to thick up tonight in advance of low pressure moving out of eastern Colorado. That low will lift northeast through Iowa and into southern Minnesota by Tuesday morning pulling a warm front closer to us and drawing in a decent amount of moisture (for October standards) northward.
While the heaviest of the rain will fall close to the low in the upper Midwest, showers will start the day in the Stateline and continue until a cold front passes late in the afternoon with rainfall amounts right around a quarter of an inch. Wrap around cloud cover and moisture will provide additional showers late Tuesday night and into Wednesday until the system moves into the northeast.
Temperatures this week will remain cooler than what we've been used but a bigger dip on the thermometer is expected by this upcoming weekend. A second cold front will move in from the northwest late Thursday night and Friday causing the jet stream to remain south of the Great Lakes and help dislodge colder air that's been in place across northern Canada; possibly keeping high temperatures this weekend only in the low 50s! Several upper level disturbances within the jet stream will keep the threat for scattered showers in the forecast through the start of the weekend. Temperatures may even be cold enough for some of those rain drops to mix with snow showers across northern Wisconsin and Minnesota! Overnight lows could fall into the upper 20s/low 30s Saturday night! Stay tuned for all the chilly details!
