After ample sunshine on Sunday, things are going to cloud up again just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Some light flurries are possible in the early morning hours of Monday, but more widespread snow is expected in the afternoon and evening. We're not looking at much though. Widespread, only about a 1/2" is expected, but isolated spots--especially west--we could see up to an inch.
After that, another Arctic blast invades the Midwest with actual air temps falling below zero in the overnight hours Tuesday through Friday. We've already seen over 2 weeks of temps falling below zero officially in Rockford. Compare that to last year, and it's been a rough winter season.
And unfortunately, there doesn't look to be much warming relief in sight. On average, there's a 60%-70% chance that temps will remain below normal through the end of the month. That doesn't mean there can't be a few days above the average high of 29°, like we saw on Sunday, but overall conditions will be colder than that. - MT
