Temperatures headed into the weekend will be very close to record breaking through Sunday afternoon. With a big dip in the jet stream to the west, an expansive ridge has been able to build across the Midwest and east coast. This, combined with strong jet winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere, oriented from the southwest have brought near record breaking warmth into the region. We will consecutively have days in the mid and upper 50's through Sunday, and its even possible to squeeze out 60° Sunday afternoon.
Temperatures today are also very close to record breaking. The record high temperature for today it 57° that was set back in 1911, and our forecasted high today is 56°.
A strong low pressure system will then bring heavy rain into the Stateline late Saturday into Sunday, and possibly Monday. Rain totals look to range between 1-2.5" across the Stateline, and western Illinois and portions of Missouri could pick up over 2.5".
A trailing cold front will steadily drop temperatures into next week. Monday and Tuesday will still be mild in the 40's, however a secondary cold front will drop temperatures in the 30's by the middle of next week. While a 20° temperature drop is a big one, this will actually bring our temperatures back to average, which is between 33-35° for this time of the year. This cold trend looks like it will continue through the end of December.
