The entire state of Minnesota is under an Air Quality Alert through the weekend due to smoke and haze from wildfires in western Canada. The smoke could actually been seen on visible satellite imagery Friday afternoon.
The Canadian wildfire smoke rises up into the atmosphere and becomes caught up within the winds of the jet stream. Those winds have been positioned from the North, moving out of Canada and into the Upper Midwest.
Over the weekend the jet stream winds will strengthen from the North, moving into Wisconsin and Illinois. This could very well fill our skies Saturday and Sunday with haze and smoke, which would make for pretty significant sunrises and sunsets. Upper level winds will shift more to the west by early next week, relieving the upper Midwest from the smoke.
