Heat Safety Tips

So far this summer we've had a few days in a row where temperatures have reached 90° or more.  This stretch of weather, though, will last through the week and possibly into the first of the weekend.  A Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for the area and it's important to understand just what the difference between the two are.  Each NWS office has their own set of criteria for issuing certain advisories and warnings.  Just because the Rockford Metro isn't under an excessive heat warning doesn't mean that you shouldn't be cautious out there.  A Heat Advisory is issued when the heat index value is expected to be at/above 100°.  An Excessive Heat Warning means that the heat index is at/above 105° and a minimum heat index at/above 75° (for the nighttime temperature) for a 48 hour period; or 4 days of heat advisory criteria are met.

During times of heat it's important to remember to drink plenty of water.  It's important for you to keep hydrated, especially if you have to be outside for a prolonged period of time.  If outside wear light-weight, light-colored clothing.  This will reflect the sun's rays.  Slow down and try to do any outdoor activities, like running or walking the dog, during the cooler periods of the day.  These are typically in the morning right before sunrise or at sunset.  Also be mindful of your pets, make sure you take care of them as well.  It gets just as hot for animals as it does you and I.

Just remember to take it slow the next couple of days.  If you don't have a/c then find a cooling center.  We often look for our nighttime temperatures to cool us off but because lows will only fall into the upper 70s there isn't going to be much relief.  These hot temperatures will continue through this weekend before possibly a brief break, but there are some signs pointing to the first week of August warming right back up.
