Accumulating Snow for Parts of the Midwest - Including the Stateline

A strong area of low pressure will move out of the central Rockies Monday night and into central Illinois by Tuesday afternoon.  Ahead of the low thunderstorms have been developing over southern Illinois and Indiana, while snow has been falling in Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Scattered showers will become more widespread during the overnight and through Tuesday morning as a warm front lifts closer to central Illinois.  Areas of fog are also possible with an increase in moisture and rising dew points.

While a few light showers will occur during the overnight, the rain will become more widespread by Tuesday morning and afternoon as the low pressure system moves into central Illinois.  We remain on the north side of the front and this will keep temperatures in the low 40's for much of the afternoon.  Further south, temperatures will reach the 50's and 60's, but that will also come with a threat for thunderstorms during the afternoon.

Temperatures will quickly fall into the 30's north of Rockford in Wisconsin where snow will accumulate Tuesday.  A mixture of rain and snow is possible for a time Tuesday morning for northern Illinois, but most of the precipitation should fall as rain.

Once the low pressure system passes Tuesday afternoon and evening cold air will be quick to return.  This will allow a transition over to snow Tuesday evening and night.  Accumulations of one inch are possible on grassy surfaces for northern Illinois by Wednesday morning, with a couple inches of snow likely in southern Wisconsin.  Further north, snow totals up to eight and even nine inches are possible!  The bright side with the snow falling this late in the season, it doesn't last long.  The downside, there's snow on the ground in April!
