Slick and Slippery Wednesday

Winter weather headlines are already being issued ahead of our next low pressure system that brings the return of wintry weather for the Plains and Midwest. Low pressure in the Plains will allow for snow to develop late tonight into tomorrow morning, with snow developing in the upper Plains to Iowa. With dry air in place tomorrow morning, we should see the early morning hours remain dry.

However, strong forcing arrives around sunrise, and this will help to overcome the drier air. Freezing rain, and rain will be possible tomorrow morning with cold temperatures at the surface and warmer temperatures aloft. Rain and freezing rain will be possible for at least a couple of hours, with ice accumulations near .05" to .10" possible. By midday, we should see a transition to a mix of sleet and rain and then all rain afternoon.

Once the low pressure system passes, we'll usher in colder air and falling temperatures. This will allow for the rain to transition to a rain to snow, to then all snow Wednesday evening. Snow accumulations look to sit near 1-2" before the snow comes to an end.

A Winter Weather Advisory has already been issued for Green, Rock, Walworth, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, and Whiteside counties for tomorrow morning. At this point, the rest of northern Illinois isn't included. This is due to uncertainty on how long the freezing rain threat lingers through Wednesday.

At this point, you'll want to plan for a slick and icy Wednesday with the threat for rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow remaining possible. Make sure to check back for updates as this forecast could change!
