The latest drought monitor from the National Drought Mitigation Center continues to show the persistent drought across the Midwest. Moderate and severe drought conditions have worsened in Illinois and Wisconsin from last week while drier than normal conditions have returned for most of northern Illinois.
Friday and Saturday will remain dry but the chance for rain may begin to ramp up by the end of the weekend. A warm front will lift closer to the Midwest late Saturday pulling in a little more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. At the same time a cold front will be dropping southeast from the High Plains. Clouds and rain will likely start the day Sunday before another area of high pressure moves in Sunday night.
The 1-3 day rainfall outlook looks promising for areas that have been hard-pressed for rainfall within the past several weeks. If the forecast holds some regions could receive a half to little over half an inch of rain by Sunday night. If, however, the two systems don't merge completely then the expected rainfall might not amount to much. It does look like the weather will turn a little more active towards the middle of next week with a possible warm up by Wednesday and Thursday before another cool down by next weekend. Long range outlooks indicate temperatures may stay above average through the last week of September, but looking at some of the overall global patterns may suggest a cooling trend could occur within the next couple weeks.
