Labor Day marked the halfway point of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th. This year has been an unusual one... mainly because of what we haven't seen.
For the first time since 2002, we have seen ZERO hurricanes through the first half of the hurricane season. We have had six named storms, but none of them made it to hurricane strength.
Despite the quiet start, NOAA is still calling for an active second half of the hurricane season. The updated forecast includes six to nine hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes (Winds greater than 110mph).
And if you think the hurricane season won't pick up, remember this: Superstorm Sandy hit in late October of last year, causing $65 billion in damage and killing more than 100 people. -BA
