Active Pattern Returns Following the 4th of July

The 4th of July weekend has been pretty nice for Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin.  Temperatures have been slightly below average with most in the upper 70's and low 80's.   The rain has stayed away and that looks to be the case for Monday as well.

High pressure moves in Tuesday with winds shifting around to the southwest during the afternoon and evening.  This will push a warm front through during the evening and overnight Tuesday which could be just enough to ignite a few showers and thunderstorms into Wednesday morning.  That warm front then becomes the focal point for periods of rain, some heavy, over the Upper Midwest.  And depending on where that front sets up will determine where the heat returns and where the heaviest rainfall will occur.

Right now that might be just to the north of Rockford, but it will be a very close call.  Because of that the Weatherisk will go to Moderate beginning Wednesday and lasting through Friday.  By Friday a cold front moves through which should bring an end to the rain threat for the following weekend.

Along with the rain our computer models are advertising the return of some very hot and humid weather.  But of course, this all depends upon the where the rain falls.  If it does in fact set up just to the north, highs by the middle of the week could very well warm into the low 90's, with the heat index pushing the upper 90's.  Dew points near 70 degrees will make it feel very uncomfortable during the day and provide very little relief at night.  We'll continue to fine-tune the forecast over the coming days but just keep in mind that we could be in store for another hot stretch beginning Wednesday.
