Summer came back with a bite Monday. Temperatures reached the upper 80's to low 90's, but with such high dew point numbers (in the middle 70's) the heat index passed the triple digit reading in a few cities: Rockford, Janesville and Savanna.
Often times during hot days we look for relief from the heat at night when the temperature cools. Unfortunately, we won't find much relief tonight with the overnight low staying in the low 70's.
Thunderstorms currently developing over the Upper Midwest and western Iowa will move east and southeast, but weaken as they do. Most of our night will stay dry with a few showers by daybreak Tuesday. Isolated thunderstorms could redevelop Tuesday afternoon and evening, but a better chance for thunderstorms will arrive Wednesday ahead of a cold front. The Storm Prediction Center has both days highlighted under a 'Slight Risk' for severe weather.
The cold front will be slow moving allowing ample moisture to pool right over Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. With showers around Tuesday morning we may end up with a little more cloud cover than we did Monday. The same could be true for Wednesday and this may keep temperatures down a little during the afternoon. However, since the dew points will stay high we won't see much relief from the humidity until Thursday.
