Thunderstorms from Iowa weakened considerably just like we said they would Tuesday morning. But the dissipating showers lead to a pretty cool sight not seen too often around here: a roll cloud.
A roll cloud is different from a shelf cloud, but they both come from the same cloud type family. A shelf cloud is associated with gusty thunderstorms, but a roll cloud is completely detached from any thunderstorm. Roll clouds are horizontal in shape and appear to be 'rolling' across the sky. They form when showers/storms fizzle out and produce cool outflow boundaries. Roll clouds can even form ahead of cold fronts.
The roll cloud from Tuesday morning was likely a result of the dissipating showers over Northwest Illinois. Pretty cool!
