Friday Evening Weather Update

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, Whiteside, Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

Low pressure will continue to weaken as it moves out of Kansas and into Missouri Friday evening, but not before a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain begins to intensify over Iowa and Illinois.  Thunderstorms have even been reported over central Illinois.

East winds much of Friday afternoon has kept the air mass over northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin pretty dry.  This will initially keep most of the moisture at bay Friday evening, but the precipitation will eventually begin to reach the ground most likely after 11pm/12am.  Initially the
precipitation will begin as a mixture of snow and sleet as a layer of warm air is present a few thousand feet above the surface.

Overnight as the dry air continues to have an influence on the precipitation the chance for freezing rain will increase, most likely south of Rockford over Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties.  There minor ice accumulations are possible, but most likely on elevated and colder surfaces.

The snow, sleet and freezing rain mixture will continue through 8am-10am Saturday evening before sinking south by Noon.  After that high pressure moves in which will help turn skies partly cloudy and warm temperatures into the mid 40's.  So any ice that does accumulate overnight won't last long into Saturday.
