Monday Update

A wintry mix of rain, sleet, and snow continues to lift to the NNE this morning over far western portions of the Stateline. A Weather Advisory is in place currently for Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, and Stephenson counties. A lot of the snow has been melting on the warmer pavement, but you'll want to watch for slick spots on some area roads.

While northwestern Illinois and southwest Wisconsin are already noticing rain and snow, the rest of the Stateline will stay dry for the next several hours. A Winter Weather Advisory will then go into effect for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, DeKalb, Rock, and Walworth counties at 3pm. After a fairly dry afternoon for north central Illinois, a wintry mix will begin around 3/4pm as lift increases and arrives from an incoming upper level trough. After a short time it will quickly transition over to all snow.

At first a lot of the snow will melt, and will accumulate mainly on grassy surfaces first. However, the snow will come down at a moderate to heavy pace early this evening, and that will allow the snow to start to accumulate more. About 1-3" is still what we are expecting for the majority of the Stateline.

This will allow for slick driving conditions for the commute home this evening, before the snow ends around midnight. Along with the wintry weather  and snow, winds will also be very strong through the afternoon and evening. Due to an increasing pressure gradient, winds will be sustained today out of the ESE around 15-25mph and will be gusting upwards of 35 to 40 mph!

The snow that falls will be heavy and slushy in nature, however it's still possible for some blowing of snow through the evening. Take it slow this evening, especially as you head home front work, and into the evening. The snow will wind down through midnight, with light snow showers into Tuesday.
