This week is Illinois Severe Weather Preparedness week. It may be hard to think of severe weather when there is snow on the ground, but some of the bigger tornadoes that have moved through Illinois have come during the 'off season'. That's why it's important to have a plan in place, and then practice that plan often.
Tuesday was the state wide tornado drill with 'test' tornado warnings activating weather radios, tornado sirens and warnings scrolling across the TV screen. The purpose behind the test was to get you to think about what to do if severe weather were to occur. 'Where would you go?' 'What would you do?'
There are three important things that everyone in your family or place of employment needs to know:
Pick a spot: Find a safe, interior room, on the lowest level of your home or office
How to get in touch: Everyone should know how to get in touch after the event is over
Choose a meet up spot: It's important for everyone to know where to meet up
The first step to being prepared for severe weather is to plan. And if you don't have a plan in place, make one!
