10:15pm Update: Snow showers are coming to an end from west to east Monday evening, with skies remaining mostly cloudy through most of the night.  Drier air moving in from the southwest has allowed the snow to come to an end, but could also bring a brief period of light freezing drizzle overnight.  So while the snow will have come to an end, roads may still be slick through the commute Tuesday morning.

5:50pm Update: Thunder is possible over the next couple hours with lightning being detected over southern Wisconsin near Footville, WI.  This could enhance some of the heavy snow in some locations this evening.

The transition over to snow, and heavy snow for some, has begun late Monday afternoon and will continue for the next several hours.

The snow has already begun to accumulate in many locations and is now beginning to stick to the roads as heavier snow has been falling.  Visibility has quickly fallen to one mile or less in many locations, which will make travel difficult this evening.

Snow becomes the dominant precipitation after 5:30pm/6pm for all and will continue through roughly Midnight.

Drier air moving in from the southwest will allow the snow to end from southwest to northwest, but could also cause a period of very light freezing drizzle during the early overnight.

Take it slow on the roads this evening as many of the country and secondary roads in northwest Illinois are now reported as nearly 100 percent snow/ice covered.
