A very messy look at Rockford with our Mercyhealth Skycam. We've dealt with rain and strong winds all day, and those strong winds even caused some power outages in a few spots. Wind gusts were as high as 50mph at some times, which is why even a few trees were knocked down too.
Winds are still pretty strong across the Stateline, and sadly wind gusts will stay strong around 40mph during the evening, but will slightly lighten up once we get into the overnight, around 30mph.
Along with the winds, precipitation will become a bit of a hazard for this evening and the overnight, as multiple forms of precipitation will be in play. We'll gradually see the transition to a wintry mix through the early hours of the evening.
Rain will be the dominate form of precipitation for the evening overnight, but sleet will make a presence early on this evening mixed in with the rain. Once we get passed 9pm, temperatures will be dropping near freezing, and by that point freezing rain will start to take over. A little bit of sleet will be possible overnight, but mostly we'll continue seeing freezing rain.
Snow won't come into play until we get into Sunday, and by Sunday morning we'll start seeing a wintry mix consisting of rain and snow, with a little sleet possible too. By the afternoon, our atmosphere will be much colder, so light snow will be taking over. However, accumulations stay small, around an inch at most.
With all the different wintry mixes and the strong winds still being in play, travel conditions are going to stay pretty poor for this evening and overnight. The wintry mix keeps the roads slick and icy, and the strong winds will lower visibility by blowing the wintry mix around. With all that in mind, definitely be cautious on the roadways.
