Many northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin residents woke up Monday morning to one to two inches of snow on the ground. The snow didn't last, but it was a harsh reminder of the chill that much of the Midwest has been dealing with in what is one of the coldest starts to April on record.
On average Rockford receives a little under one inch of snow during the month of April, and accumulating snow this late in the season isn't that uncommon. Looking back over many years of climatological data the average latest date Rockford receives measurable snow - 0.10" or more - usually occurs around April 4th. The average latest date of one inch of snow or more typically ends at the end of March, but has been recorded as late as May.
When snow does occur this late in the season it doesn't last long and usually melts away fairly quickly.
