Blustery End to the Weekend!
Good evening Stateline. Rain moved in this afternoon and it was heavy at times. The heaviest of the rain is now off to our northeast and we should see rain slowly taper off from here. Around the Stateline, a majority of us saw over a half an inch of rain with Dekalb reporting the most at .80". Rockford just received over a half an inch with .54.
Now, the combination of warmer temperatures, and the heavy rainfall allowed for leftover snow and ice to melt. A flash flood advisory and flash flood warning have been issued for portions of our viewing area due to the threat of ponding in poorly drained areas.
Right now, winds are calm the center of the low moves overhead .... pretty cool huh? As we move closer to midnight, winds will begin to ramp up. And that is why we have a wind advisory in effect for Jo-Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Lee, and Dekalb counties until 8 AM tomorrow morning. Winds tonight could gust as high as 45 mph at times.
Now why are we going to be so windy tonight and tomorrow. Well it all has to do with this low pressure system that gave us all that rain earlier. When a low strengthens, it deepens and creates a tight pressure gradient at the surface. The tighter the pressure gradient, the stronger the wind gusts will be.
Right now, we do have a lull in the winds as the low's center moves overhead. But, as the low pushes to our northeast, winds will begin to ramp up after 10 PM tonight. Then by around 2 AM, winds could be gusting as high as 45 mph before things slowly lighten up by tomorrow morning. However, winds will be gusting near 35 mph throughout the day tomorrow. HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS EVERYONE!
