Recent Cold May Cause Ice Jam Flooding

Highs temperatures this past week have not made it past 20 degrees and overnight lows have fallen either right around zero degrees, or slightly below.

With the recent cold snap it's very likely that a rapid development of ice has occurred on local rivers and streams such as the Rock and Kishwaukee rivers.  While flooding has not been recorded, river gauges along the Rock River in Byron have indicated rapid fluctuations in the river.  This is a likely result of ice jams forming and dislodging the past several days.

Ice jam flooding isn't forecast to occur as river levels are expected to remain below flood stage.  If, however, you're in a low lying area along the river make sure you pay close attention because ice jams can cause minor (or major) flooding to occur without much notice.
