Friday afternoon weather update

Temperatures have slowly been climbing near or slightly above 32 degrees this afternoon.  They'll continue to do so late this afternoon as a warm front moves closer.  Looking to the south, rain has begun to move near the I-88 corridor and will continue to lift north into the afternoon reaching the Rockford area between 1:30pm and 2:30pm.

Looking at the temperature profile a few thousand feet above, temperatures aloft south of Rockford have warmed above freezing but right near the Stateline they remain below freezing.  This could allow for a small window of freezing drizzle/rain into the afternoon for areas close to and north of the Wisconisn/Illinois border.  A Freezing Rain Advisory remains in effect for Rock and Walworth counties through 7pm and a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Green County until 6am Saturday.

Moisture will continue to stream northward through the evening with the heaviest of the rain falling after 3pm.  Rainfall amounts will range from roughly a couple tenths of an inch closer to 0.75" from west to east.  The graphic to the left is the simulated radar image for the Great Lakes at 3pm.  Where the heavier rain falls, it possible there could be a little flooding as the snow melts.  The snow/water equivalent in Northern Illinois is roughly between 1" and 2".  This means if we were to melt all the snow currently on the ground we would have approximately that much water.  A complete snow melt isn't anticipated but we will see some of it melt away this afternoon and later this weekend.  This could lead to some flooding in low lying areas and along streams and river.  Ice jams are also possible within the next few days as the ice from the recent cold begins to break up.
