It wasn't our 'first official' snowfall, but it was our first accumulating snow of the season. Officially at the Rockford Chicago International Airport, 0.2 inches of snow was recorded. Many reported snow accumulating on grassy surfaces early Sunday morning before a transition back over to drizzle occurred during the afternoon.
Our first snowfall actually came on the evening of Friday, October 27th. Only a 'trace' of snow occurred, but it was our first snowfall. These two snow events are actually pretty close to when northern Illinois typically experiences its first snowfall.
When looking back over the past 30 years of climate data, on average our first trace of snow occurs sometime around November 2nd. The first 0.10 inch of snow, or more, around the 20th of November and the first one inch of snow occurs usually within the first week of December. Of course, as you know, accumulating snow can occur at anytime but most often we tend to see our first accumulating snowfall within the first couple of weeks of November.
