Some Could See Snow This Weekend

Our eyes are still on our next system that will bring rain to northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin by Friday, but it also has the potential to bring snow across portions of the Midwest.

Low pressure will move across the upper Plains, and its warm front will lift across the area early Friday. This will cause our surface winds to strengthen as they turn to the south, and they will turn gusty into the afternoon. This will draw in a lot of warm and moist air into the area through Friday. Clouds will thicken Friday morning ahead of the front, but highs should still be able to make it into the upper 40's. It's possible for a few sprinkles or patchy drizzle Friday afternoon, but because it will take a bit for the atmosphere to saturate Friday we don't have a bit threat for a lot of rain in the afternoon. We can expect a few showers Friday by dinner time, as a secondary area of low pressure develops in the plains and rides up the cold front. This will bring with it enough lift to help trigger showers and even a few embedded storms.

Rain will continue into the overnight hours, as the low pressure passes over northern Illinois. The cold front will pass by Saturday, with rain possible on the backside of the system.

Some models suggest though that enough cold air will be present for a transition to a rain snow mix or even all snow into Saturday.

The NAM model is the most extreme model with the transition to all snow.

While the EURO model is warmer, and features a cold rain falling into Saturday. At this point, it seems like we will notice a light rain/snow mix at the tail end of precipitation on Saturday. Though you won't have to worry about any accumulations just yet.

However, if you're traveling north into central and northern Wisconsin, then you'll run into light snow accumulations by Saturday.
