Rain chances quickly return overnight, linger into Thursday

The Stateline saw not one, not two but three rounds of potent to severe storms Tuesday. Each bringing with it a damaging wind and hail risk as well as the threat for heavy rain/flash flooding.

Thankfully, the tornado threat was low. However, the National Weather Service will be heading out to northern McHenry County today to conduct a survey on a collapse barn. Evidence will tell if the damage was done by winds or a brief tornado.

Compared to Tuesday, today won't be as active. In fact, much of the day will be spent under a partly cloudy sky. That, along with today's southeasterly wind will allow for highs in the upper 70s.

While an isolated thunderstorm or two cannot be ruled out this afternoon, much higher rain chances will arrive overnight into Thursday.

Storms firing off to the west will track eastward with time, arriving in a scattered fashion a little after sunset and closer to midnight. Similar to Tuesday's activity, these will pose a Marginal Risk for strong winds and hail as well as heavy rainfall.

The heaviest rain should push out before daybreak, leaving chances scattered for the rest of our Thursday. On top of Thursday's cloudy and rainy outlook will leave highs much cooler, landing roughly 20° below today's afternoon highs. Sunshine will make a quick return to round out the work week, allowing temperatures to climb back into the 60s. Temperatures from there will continue to trend upward, landing in the low 70s by Mother's Day.
