Sunshine returns Sunday; Active pattern returns next week

After a few severe warned storms moved through Saturday afternoon, the weather Sunday is expected to be much quieter. Cloud cover was quick to move out Saturday night, paving the way for plenty of sunshine Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures starting out in the 40s will quickly warm with the rising sun, reaching the upper 60s and low 70s Sunday afternoon. Rockford's forecast high is 70 degrees. We may see a few higher-level clouds from time to time from a weakening storm complex to the southwest, but overall skies should remain mostly sunny.

Temperatures Sunday night will fall into the low 40s once again, reaching the middle 70s Monday.

The active weather pattern continues into the upcoming week with another multi-day severe weather event taking place. Locally, the threat for severe weather is there but it remains highest outside of the immediate viewing area. Severe thunderstorms are likely Sunday afternoon and evening over the southern Plains and lower Mississippi River Valley.

That threat shifts north a bit for Monday where another severe weather outbreak will be likely, in areas that have already dealt with severe weather.

The storms that form over the Plains will shift east but should weaken as they move closer to the Mississippi River Tuesday morning.

Showers and non-severe thunderstorms will be likely early Tuesday, shifting east/northeast mid-morning. Temperatures will warm into the mid and upper 70s with the chance for a redevelopment of thunderstorms during the afternoon. However, the threat for severe weather Tuesday has shifted some and now resides over southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. While there may be an isolated severe storm or two for the afternoon, the greatest risk could fall just outside of the viewing area.

A secondary low will develop Wednesday with yet again another chance for severe storms over central and southern Illinois. Following the active pattern a deep, and cool, upper-level low will move through Great Lakes before shifting to the east by the end of the week. This will bring a return of a slightly cooler pattern with below average temperatures. The average high during that time should be in the upper 60s.
