Sunshine returns Wednesday

Temperatures Tuesday struggled to make it much above the mid-60s during the afternoon. Cloudy skies, a brisk northeast wind, and scattered rain showers throughout the day kept temperatures below average for only the second time this month. But the chill won't last as temperatures warm back into the low 70s Wednesday.

Low pressure spinning through southern Illinois will continue to pull further away from the Stateline. As it does, drier air from high pressure to the north will gradually move in. This will help turn skies partly cloudy overnight with temperatures falling into the mid-40s.

Skies will remain partly cloudy Wednesday with afternoon temperatures reaching the low 70s. Winds will remain light from northeast Wednesday before shifting back around to the southwest Thursday. This will help keep afternoon temperatures in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies. Rain and isolated storm chances do return, however, Thursday afternoon. The chance for rain will be ahead of a cold front that'll sweep through Friday, but with high pressure building overhead Friday afternoon temperatures will actually warm into the upper 70s.

The warmth will continue into the weekend with highs reaching the low 80s, but we'll hold on to the chance for a storm or two through early next week. Beyond next week, and closer to Memorial Day weekend, we may begin to see a little more of a pattern change as temperatures shift to slightly below average. The average high around Memorial Day weekend should be in the mid-70s.
