Wintry weather may impact holiday travel next week

The next couple of days will be the warmest for a little while, as a much cooler stretch will settle in through the week ahead. Sunday, highs reach near 50° with a chance for spotty showers and patches of drizzle late into the evening and overnight. Those may linger into Monday morning before another round of scattered showers arrives Monday evening. Temperatures Monday will be falling throughout the evening, eventually reaching the mid-20s by Tuesday morning with more sunshine expected Tuesday afternoon.

Turning our eyes to next week, holiday travel may be impacted by an expansive weather system across the Central U.S. into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions. One way we can key in on the location of these systems is by looking at our jet stream pattern, showing winds about 15,000 to 20,000 feet in the air. Stronger winds indicate more energy and possible weather systems. Two branches of the jet stream, the Northern and Southern branches, may try to interact together, or phase, during the middle of next week. This will develop a surface low pressure system with precipitation along the edges of it. If we see more phasing, the system could have a Northerly and stronger track. If there is less phasing, the system would favor a weaker, Southern solution.

While we are too far out to determine exact location of the system and its strength, there is a growing possibility for a weather system to bring wintry impacts to the region between Tuesday night and Thursday. This would be from Iowa/Missouri over to Ohio and eventually the Northeast in the later part of the week. With this being a busy holiday travel time frame, those within the shaded region will need to keep a close eye on the weather forecast next week to be prepared for any potential wintry weather during that time.
