The First Snowstorm of the Season for Northern Illinois

Low pressure over Iowa tonight will move toward St. Louis by morning.  It is moving southeast along a nice thermal gradient throwing moisture up and over cold air sitting in place over northern Illinois.  Three, and as many as four inches of fresh snow, have fallen over eastern Iowa and extreme northwestern Illinois as of 11 pm Friday night.  The heaviest snow continues to fall in a narrow band along the the Mississippi River  from La Crosse, Wisconsin across Dubuque to just east of the Quad Cities.  A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is en effect overnight through Saturday afternoon for the entine Stateline area.  In the Greater Rockford area 2" to 5" of snow are expected from this system.  It appears as if less snow will fall to the east of Interstate 39 than to the west of it.  Snowfall totals over far northwestern Illinois could reach 6" with locally more in some spots.  The bulk of the snow will fall before daybreak on Saturday,  and gradually taper off to flurries in the afternoon.  By late on Saturday the Clipper System will be over Kentucky pulling out of the midwest, and pulling colder air into the upper midwest as it moves off to the east.  Arctic high pressure will be a major player in Stateline weather during the first half of next week.  Northern Illinois will have the coldest spell of weather since last February.
