How dry was May 2012?

We received some much needed rain yesterday.  The preliminary measurement from the Weather Service in Chicago/Romeoville for May 31, 2012, was 0.98 inches.  That put our monthly total at 1.62 inches, which is 2.4 inches below the average precipitation amount for May.  Just to put this in perspective, we saw 3.94 inches during May 2011.  In fact, the last significant rainfall (0.1 inches or greater) for May 2012 came on the 7th, and we saw 0.23 inches that day.
