Thursday morning weather update

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through this evening.

Mostly sunny skies will be found this morning as the temperature quickly rises into the low 80s by this mid-morning.  Earlier, there were a few elevated showers and even thunderstorms that developed in eastern Iowa.  These elevated showers formed in a 'moisture rich' environment out ahead of a weak cool front in northwest Iowa.  Since this morning they have faded and almost become non-existant - so no hope for rain this morning.  However, you may see a few extra clouds moving across the skies.  Something interesting also happened with some of the elevated storms near Cedar Rapids.  It's possible a small heat burst occured as the storm cell moved near Cedar Rapids, IA as well as Montecello, IA.  A heat burst is a downdraft of hot & dry air.  The air starts its descent from fairly high up and the surrounding environmental air aloft need to be very dry as well.  As the air accelerates towards the surface it rapidly warms.  The temperature in Cedar Rapids went from 73 degrees to 80 degrees as the storm passed and from 75 degrees to 81 degrees in Montecello.  Nothing too signficant with this particular event, but interesting enough.

Dew points by this afternoon will likely rise into the upper 60s and low 70s as moisture pools along the front.  This will cause the heat index to rise as high as 105° to 108° across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.  Please remember to take it easy this afternoon and take the necessary precautions needed to beat the heat this afternoon.

Temperatures are starting off this morning in the mid 70s and will quickly rise into the upper 80s by the late morning.  Dewpoints are currently in the mid 60s and will also rise into the 70s, making it feel very humid out there.  Dewpoints already in the 70s to the west of us in eastern Iowa.  Some clouds and light showers formed out ahead of the cold front in eastern Iowa, but are currently breaking up as they push further east.
