A break in the rain will continue through the afternoon with only a slight chance for additional storms later this afternoon and evening. Active weather will remain in place through early Wednesday morning until a cold front passes to the south.
A slight risk for severe weather remains to the west/northwest of the Stateline with storms likely developing across the Plains and upper Midwest later this afternoon. It's still a little unclear as to if those storms, should they develop, will move into N. IL and S. WI by Tuesday morning. If in fact they do, then heavy rain will likely be present. Skies will remain partly cloudy Tuesday allowing the atmosphere to heat up and destabilize throughout the afternoon.
If storms by Tuesday morning are still to the west they will run into an unstable atmosphere as they track east across the Stateline. This could help fuel strong to severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts being the primary concern. Of second concern Tuesday (along with the remainder of today) will be the potential for heavy rain. Copious amounts of moisture remain in the atmosphere and this will cause any storm that does develop to produce very heavy rainfall. Rainfall totals between one and two inches over the next two days will be possible. The threat for rain will continue into early Wednesday before skies dry and cooler, more comfortable, weather settles in.
