While we haven't quite reached 'drought' status in northern Illinois, parts of west-central Illinois have. And with little rainfall on the horizon for the next couple of days the abnormally dry conditions could expand. In Wisconsin, a couple counties in the southwestern part of the state are now considered in a moderate drought.
Released every Thursday, the drought monitor is compiled every Tuesday from a team of climatologists and local experts on ground water, soil and weather all across the country. Together, they work to put the drought monitor together using a more quantitative approach.
There is a little rain in the forecast for next week, as this week's cold front doesn't look to produce much more than very light showers during the day. And while I don't think with the next update we'll quite reach the 'abnormally dry' conditions, I do think more counties in Illinois will see the drought conditions expand.
